I hope the touchscreen on the home phone version of Archos Home Connect is better than the touchscreen on their clock radio-- I've been working with the radio version since Saturday evening (when it showed up on my doorstep)-- it SUCKS-- even way worse than the Archos touchscreens of the past (and that's saying something). It requires you to literally pick the thing up, holding firmly in one hand, while "touching" (jabbing FIRMLY) with the finger from the other hand, akin to holding a ball of hard clay and punching a hole in it with your finger-- it requires THAT much pressure in order to get the screen on it to respond. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE-- and I suspect it's how Archos got away with marking it with such a low price (US $149)-- by using such sub-par digitizer/controller hardware. The visual quality of the screen is adequate, not outstanding, but hey, it's only a 3.5 inch screen-- it does the job for which it's intended there-- but the "human interface" design was completely botched-- and that includes installing their so-called "firmware update" that it detected upon my first boot-up-- I'm not confident any of their future updates will compensate for this glaring failure for such an otherwise potentially attractive insertion into the "tabletop clock radio" market.

It does not matter where the Archos is put together and what "made in" label has. Important is the open system, support, enthusiastic comunity of users and price. Not only students, but a lot of linux users like it, because it is open :-) MANY thanks to ALL developers and openminded people.

That's a good question. I'm considering the 101 myself. I think I'll wait till mid November. After researching several different tablets I have come back to the Archos and I hope that it holds up to the great reveiws I've seen. Thanks !

I plan to get either the 8" or 10" model or I should say I was... what Im wondering is will they have an update to Icecream since its right around the corner for being released? or should I wait the month or two to get a tablet with Icecream on it? this being a fan site and being listed on Archos site I figure someone here would be able to get the answer, if they find out an update will come out for it then I am all over the turbo version when it comes out since its not to much more over the non. :) Thanks guys for your help.

Archos has 100 employees in France. Apple has 50 thousand employees in the USA. If France wants more high-tech employees, it's quite simple, they have to invest in Archos to grow it to a thousand plus high-tech mostly r&d and manufacturing resource management jobs based in France, thus paying more taxes in France. It's very simple for the French Government to estimate the potential of the company and invest in a way they are sure to get their money back (with or without interests) quite fast, and by investing in Archos's growth, they enable them to grow and sell much more by themselves without the need of the Government's help.

I suppose that helps Archos as a company, and the buyers in savings, but I see that my Archos 5 Android was made in China (like about everyone else's tablets, notably Apple), so not much job impact it would seem. I have enjoyed it up till now, but now the notorious battery swelling has started, so I picked up a used Dell Streak 5 instead to stay with this form factor that is ideal for me, and upgrade to FroYo since Archos has abandoned the 5. And I can replace the battery easily when its time comes.

Still, I wish them luck against the "big boys".

I think it's normal for first batches of new products to have about 5% or less defective units, especially at the screen area, sorry for you that you were an unlucky one.

Hope you like your 80 when you get it. I just hope mine just comes back from RMA with a working touchscreen.

My guess on all the touchscreen problems with the 80 are due to door in the back for the USB connector. It is like placing a door in a wall, it makes the wall much weaker. Similarly it looks like the new case design of the G9 series didn't put in near enough physical supports to handle the cutout.At least to me.

Plus $5 for shipping. I see Amazon.com itself is selling it for $280. So less than the $299 we were expecting?

This is half the weight of a netbook, half the thickness, runs 2x longer on a 4x smaller battery, unlike Netbooks it has HDMI output, it has much better video codecs support, a built-in USB host port (for the USB 3G stick not to have to stick out of the design), it's much less hot, it's much less noisy, connects instantly to wifi, 3G for web browsing. ARM Powered devices are much better than those that are Intel powered.

Archos is always the best value on the market. You cannot find a cheaper better tablet, that is just a fact. You forget to mention that the $469 top of the line Archos 101 G9 is more than 50% faster than competition, and comes with 8x more storage with a 250GB hard drive in there.

This is overpriced... $300-$470. Well, there probably will be a price war coming soon because there are too many tablet makers releasing these products in the MILLIONS of quantitty and they can't sit in warehouses forever (in Asia or elsewhere). Neverheless, you can get 4x the value in a netbook/laptop compared to tablets. Something to consider.. (4gb ram, 1gb video memory 500gb hard drive hdmi output etc and all for under $500)

All students are hard up for cash, and those even more up for cash will take the WiFi only deal at 30 euro cents per day, 3G really isn't needed all schools and homes have WiFi.

Students are usually clever enough to know the difference between 365 euro and 730 euro, they know the difference between 15 euro per month and 30 euro per month, nobody in their right mind will consider anything else than Archos obviously.

At $99, pretty soon everyone is going to have one. And you can use your digital subscription anyplace you want, on your home computer, on your phone, even on your e-reader. You just get a cheap tablet, you don't actually have to read the newspaper on it.

Ok, not a bad deal but who in their right mind would walk around my beloved home city carrying an Arnova 10" tablet instead of a $.50 newspaper? Uh, nobody who doesn't want a knock on the head. So maybe a couple of soccer moms stopping in Starbucks for a quick one might but savvy city folks...NOT! Not seeing this working for any major metro area in the Northeast corridor. Too many potential hazards like flash mobs or crossing the street on a red.

That's not a confirmation sorry. The people answering emails often don't know much, if they see some G9 1Ghz having 512MB RAM they may think that means all G9 has that, but they don't know.
